Alexandra Knie

In Hybrid Bio-Models – between the natural and the synthetic, Alexandra Knie develops an artistic investigation situated at the intersection of biology, astrobiology and visual representation. Drawing from scientific imagery and terminology, the artist constructs delicate structures that combine synthetic threads with vegetal elements such as algae, lichens or roots. The result is a series of hybrid forms — transitional organisms that blur the boundaries between the natural and the artificial. Her practice engages with biomimetic approaches, revealing both the transformation of ecosystems through human intervention and the capacity of living matter to adapt to technological environments.

Alexandra Knie (*1984, Mechernich, Germany) lives and works between Valencia and the Cologne area in Germany.

She graduated in Fine Arts from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Alfter/Bonn (2003–2007) and complemented her studies with painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Genoa (Italy, 2006), as well as Textile Design, Arts and Humanities at the University of Paderborn (Germany, 2009).

Her work focuses on artistic research at the intersection of art, craft, and science. Throughout her career, she has worked with a wide range of textile techniques—particularly machine embroidery and its digital extensions—alongside painting, drawing, screen printing, and installation.
